chevron-led joint venture accepts greenhouse gas assessment permit offshore barrow island, australia
PERTH, Western Australia, 18 December 2024 – Chevron Corporation, through its subsidiary Chevron Australia New Ventures Pty Ltd (Operator), and its Joint Venture participants Shell Australia Pty Ltd and Mobil Australia Resources Company Pty Limited, have been awarded the greenhouse gas assessment permit G-20-AP, located in the Northern Carnarvon Basin offshore Western Australia.
G-20-AP is adjacent to Barrow Island and covers an area of 2,222 km2 with water depths of 25-125m.
Chevron Australia energy transition general manager David Fallon said Chevron looked forward to working with the G-20-AP joint venture participants to investigate the permit area.
“Carbon capture and storage is an important tool and this permit award demonstrates the potential to lower the carbon intensity of our operations as well as potentially third-party emissions,” Fallon said.
Chevron and the Joint Venture will now start to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of the geological storage of carbon dioxide in the permit area.
According to the International Energy Agency, reaching global net zero will be virtually impossible without CCUS.1
